Thinking About Becoming a Classical Pilates Teacher?
What to expect
— and how to prepare
Many students reach a point in their Classical Pilates journey where curiosity turns into commitment — they want to learn how to teach the method they love. If questions like “How do I become a Classical Pilates teacher?” or “What’s the best programme near me?” sound familiar, you’re in the right place.
Before You Begin
Before applying, it’s important to have a solid personal practice and to be familiar with the full system — not just the Mat or Reformer, but how all the apparatus work together to strengthen your body and connect your movement. That means taking lessons with the studio or teacher you plan to train under.
You should already understand the exercises in your own body before learning how to teach them to others. This foundation allows you to focus on precision, rhythm, and teaching skill — not on memorizing new movements for the first time.
“Classical Pilates teacher training isn’t where you start learning the method — it’s where you deepen and refine what you already know.”
What to Expect from Classical Training
A true Classical Pilates teacher training is mentorship-based and deeply immersive. You’ll study the original system as passed down from Joseph Pilates through Romana Kryzanowska and the generations she trained — preserving the transitions, order, and intent of the work.
Most comprehensive programmes run a minimum of 12–18 months and in addition to in-studio lectures/seminars/workshops include:
Supervised teaching and observation hours
Self-practice and independent study
Written and practical assessments
Ongoing feedback and mentorship
“It’s a demanding process - but one that shapes teachers who truly understand the system and can carry it forward with integrity.”
