Classical Pilates follows the original system developed by Joseph Pilates and taught to his protégé Romana Kryzanowska, who carried this work forward with clarity, structure, and deep respect for how she learned it.

What makes Classical… Classical?

It’s Pilates taught in the lineage Joseph passed to Romana, preserved and shared teacher-to-teacher, including:

  • The full progression of Mat and Apparatus work

  • Strong focus on flow, control, and precision

  • Purposeful transitions that build stamina and rhythm

  • A whole-body approach from start to finish

Your first session: what to expect

Many Classical studios offer both private lessons and small-group classes. We recommend starting with private sessions if possible — they help you get the most out of the equipment and understand how the work supports your body.

In your first few visits, you’ll typically explore:

  • Reformer work to feel support and spring resistance

  • Mat work to to continue those connections

  • Additional apparatus as needed — like the Cadillac, Ladder Barrel, Wunda Chair, or Tower — depending on your needs, goals, and strengths.

Your teacher will focus on helping you move with control and confidence — one step at a time.

What to wear

  • Fitted, comfortable clothing

  • Hair tied back if needed

  • Grip socks if you have them (studios often sell them)

What to avoid

  • Loose shorts

  • Dangly jewelry

  • Anything that might catch on equipment

No need to be flexible, coordinated, or experienced. You show up — and the method meets you.

When will I feel a difference?

While it’s not clear that Joseph Pilates famously said:

In 10 sessions you’ll feel the difference,
in 20 sessions you’ll see the difference,
and in 30 you’ll have a whole new body.

Many newcomers do notice changes in strength, stamina, and body awareness surprisingly quickly — especially if they practice 2–3 times per week.

Why Classical Pilates teachers are different

Teachers listed here on Classical Pilates Connect are trained in lineage directly connected to Romana — meaning:

  • A comprehensive, system-based education

  • Deep understanding of the apparatus

  • Respect for how the work was taught to and carried forward by Romana

  • Guidance that adapts to your body and goals

It’s not just exercise — Classical Pilates is a craft, passed teacher-to-teacher.
